Overview

Our ELA Lab seeks to improve students’ skills in language arts.  We utilize a portfolio system in which students and their instructors track progress, reflect on past performance (an important part of learning), and build organization to help students develop the executive functioning skills required to succeed in and outside of school.  ES founders believe it is important to highlight the essential concepts that are crucial in teaching grammar, spelling, reading, vocabulary and writing to keep educational gaps from forming and building a solid educational foundation.

In our small group setting, instructors focus on a specific set of skills each week. Each class will introduce new concepts, reinforce and build upon base knowledge, and challenge students to go even further.  All activities and assignments will be designed with both the Common Core and Massachusetts state standards in mind.

Pre-K ELA

Students build vocabulary through:

  • Interactive storytelling activities
  • Identifying phonetic patterns
  • Practicing writing
  • Introducing parts of speech (mostly nouns and verbs)

Grammar instruction focuses on:

  • Capitalization rules
  • Basic punctuation rules
  • Basic sentence structure

Students practice these skills through direct instruction, reading examples, and composing their own work.

Pre-K ELA and Math Labs are joined; students in the Pre-K ELA class will also participate in the math section.

Fourth & Fifth Grade

Fourth and fifth grade students will attend a single class session per week, every week for one six-week cycle. The class will focus on building writing skills through vocabulary and grammar development as well as interactive storytelling activities, writing practices and guided conversations. Each six week program will have an overarching theme on which the specific class sessions will be based. Examples of themes include expository writing, narrative, or persuasive writing.

Sixth Grade

Our sixth grade classes will focus on the use of descriptive language in literature through analysis of various literary works, ranging from narratives to poetry. They will explore the impact of word placement and detail through the creation of their own works in each of these genres. Throughout the class, they will be encouraged to use the writing process outlined by their teacher, and shown how to apply it to a range of academic subjects.

Seventh Grade

Seventh grade classes will focus mainly on expository writing and its characteristics. They will practice writing clear, concise body paragraphs and transitioning between main ideas, while maintaining their focus on the topic. Students will also learn how to self-edit their work and conclude their essays effectively.

Eighth Grade 

Eighth grade classes will dive deep into the writing process, beginning with defining a purpose and ending with structuring conclusion paragraphs. They will work with databases and other resources to learn how to collect, organize, and integrate information into their writing with proper citation.

The 6 week cycle includes one cycle per week. Students will select one weekday and time slot. They will attend on the same day and time every week.
